Olympian athletes commit to collegiate athletics

Senior Rhett Myers committed play football at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. The Air Force Academy coaches contacted East football’s coach, Bob Gaddis, to make contact with Myers. Myers chose to attend USAFA in order to get a great education as well as play football. “East coaches did a great job of teaching the fundamentals and skills of football. They also do a great job of getting us stronger and faster in the weight room,” Myers said.
Junior Cortney VanLiew committed to Florida Gulf Coast University because of the Fort Myers location as well as the unique opportunity to play both indoor and sand volleyball. “East prepared me extremely well. With all the techniques they have given me and taught me, I feel ready to go,” VanLiew said. Most of VanLiew’s connections to colleges came through club volleyball, but also from Coach Stacie Pagnard from East.
Senior Andrew Thomasson committed to play soccer at Drake University. “It’s Division I, and I really liked the atmosphere because it reminded me of Indianapolis,” Thomasson said about the Des Moines, Iowa institution. Brad Barber, who has been coaching soccer at East for the past six years, has helped prepare the Thomasson for college play with with his attitude at practice. While he aids the team in the recruiting process, most of Thomasson’s help came from his Olympic Developmental Program coaches.
Junior volleyball player Bailey Western committed to Northern Kentucky University, located in Highland Heights. Western was drawn in by the campus, the coaches, and the her future teammates, visiting in both July and September of this year. “The atmosphere of East volleyball is like a family, and it has continued on to Northern Kentucky, which has a family atmosphere as well,” Western said.
Senior Kortney Thalls committed to play volleyball at Indiana Wesleyan University. There, she plans on studying Psychology at the Marion school and then advance into Neuropsychology, one of the reasons Thalls was attracted to the university. “East has prepared me [for college volleyball] because the team is very competitive,” Thalls said. Thalls' club coaches and Coach Stacie Pagnard at East have assisted her in the recruitment process.
Senior Brooke Statler committed to play volleyball at Tusculum College, located in Greenville, Tennessee. “You take two classes every eight weeks, which gives you a lot more time to study, which will be helpful being an athlete,” Statler said. Statler was recruited while attending a showcase, made possible by Circle City Volleyball Club. She attributes her work ethic to East's volleyball program.
