Brand New released an album earlier this year, entitled Science Fiction. Released on Aug. 17, it raced up the Billboard 200 chart, sitting at number one only a few days later. The success of the album may be credited to more than one outstanding factor.

Immediately as the first song, Lit Me Up, begins, there is a small opening dialogue in place to set the scene for the song. This narration occurs a few times throughout the album, allowing it to stand out without appearing choppy or cut up.

Along with this dialogue stands the mix of electric and acoustic sound, featured in songs such as Same Logic/Teeth.

With these other factors, rather controversial lyrics appear consistently. Mental illness and depression are conveyed a number of times in tracks such as Same Logic/Teeth, or Can’t Get It Out as the band describes different patterns of self-harm and self-loathing.

There are then songs such as 137, which deal with nuclear war, and 451, which connects with government oppression. The song 451, for example, alludes to the book Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, in which a ban is placed on books and any found are burned by the government.

While these factors may all contribute to the prosperity of the release so far, many fans argue that it has everything to do with this being Brand New’s final album. The last track on the album, Batter Up, is debated frequently.

In spite of some seeing it as the final salute given by the band, a goodbye to their fan base, others have said it is another song about depression. Either way, the album as a whole serves as a final sign off for the band since their debut in 2000.
