Columbus East wrestling continued its impressive postseason run with six Olympians winning their first round matchups at the IHSAA State Finals on Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Here is how the East winners advanced:

  • 126: Cayden Rooks (43-1) opened East’s night with a 16-1 technical fall over Crown Point’s Kaellin Kelly.
  • 132: Graham Rooks (45-0) followed up his brother’s win with a 15-4 victory against Harrison’s Cody Betourne.
  • 138: Dawson Combest (43-2) advanced with a 5-3 decision against Beech Grove’s Bailey Moore.
  • 145: Jake Schoenegge (40-5) cruised into Saturday with an 18-3 tech fall against Attica’s Jorden Douglass.
  • 152: Corban Pollitt (33-8) scored an escape and a late takedown to overcome Yorktown’s Eric Hiestand, who had won a semistate championship a week earlier.
  • 160: Nick South (45-1) shut out Fort Wayne Carroll’s Ethan Hicks in a 12-0 major decision.

Two East wrestlers ended their 2018 seasons with decision losses on Friday night. Andy Davidson suffered a 3-0 loss to Greenfield-Central’s Bradley Lowe at 170, and 220-pounder Jacob Bolte fell 9-2 to Elwood’s Kyle Cornwell.

The victorious East wrestlers will continue their state finals journey in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 9 a.m.
