Dear Mrs. Gentry,

Coming into junior year I was a little scared to be in an AP English class because this was my first real AP class. I had heard about you from a lot of other students that had you before and they were all good things, so I was going into your class ready. I definitely got what I expected and a lot more to be honest. You have a soft spot for each of your students and you care for each and every one of them. Not every teacher is able to connect with their students the way you do and that makes me very appreciative of you. You showed me how to get motivated and never to stop short at anything I do, basically to try harder at whatever I’m working on.

Besides school related stuff, I’ve also been able to see the side of you outside of school. The Red for Ed day was so fun and the three of you, my mom, Mrs. Hult and you, definitely made it a memorable experience. Don’t worry, I still remember not to repeat anything that was said in the van that day. Anyway, you are super energetic and always have a solution to a problem, even when you’re stressed or really busy, school-related or not.

Like I said, going into junior year scared me because I had heard all the stereotypes about it being the hardest school year. Although AP English is a lot of work, you are always there for any questions, suggestions and advice. You were always there for me, and anyone else, who needed you and your help, even if it was not school-related. I love your sense of humor and your passion for what you do. It has taught me that no matter what you do, you can have fun and do it with a purpose. You have a way to reach each student and give them a hard push to what they need to reach because somehow (it must be some sort of teacher thing) you know what they need.

During this weird time, I honestly look forward to your little messages that you send everyday on itsLearning. Before getting into the work and reading I have to do, seeing stories you put, pictures you put, or little questions like “Is cereal a soup?” gives me a little smile and I know that you still and will always care about us. Your attendance questions are always good too and constantly engage with your classes, which tends to be harder now that we have not seen each other or anyone in almost two months. But just know that those little things you choose to include give me a little break, and I miss being your class physically everyday.

I have come to learn that there are several types of teachers, but you are one that has made a huge impact on me and tons of other students. You not only show that you care, but you believe in your students and push them to the next stage in life. You believe in students when a lot of other people do not and that is evident in what you do every day. Now I am even more excited that you are coming to Costa Rica with us and I will be able to see you after I graduate. Keep your passion even when times get rough and thanks for being there for me and everyone else.

Sincerely,

Gaby Heredia
