After two and a half years of being a stay at home mom, Abby Howe returns to Columbus East High School to continue teaching. In the afternoon, Howe has three consecutive mods of freshmen English classes, which used to be taught by Julie Hult.

Since Howe has taught freshmen English for 17 years, she was more than qualified to fill this teaching position. However, when Howe left Columbus East, she did not expect to ever come back to teaching.

“I wasn’t looking for a job, but this was the ideal job. I loved the idea of having a part time schedule,” Howe said.

Howe found that little had changed in her time away from Columbus East, except for the ever growing presence of technology. ItsLearning is a huge learning experience for Howe, since the school began using the program these past couple years.

Howe said, “Cell phone use is even more rampant and obnoxious than when I last taught.”

Besides the growing use of technology, Howe’s love for teaching is as strong as ever. Howe thoroughly enjoys watching her students grow in their education.

“[My favorite part of teaching] is seeing kids expand their own horizons and learning something new,” Howe said.
