With prom just around the corner, it is the perfect time to start thinking about and shopping for your dress! Shopping for dresses is fun, but realistically, prom is incredibly expensive, especially for high school students. According to PromGirl.com, customers spend on average anywhere from $175 to thousands of dollars on a single prom dress, and that doesn’t even include the cost of the ticket, pictures, shoes, getting hair, makeup, or nails done, and day-of plans such as dinner. It is possible to budget prom, but one night still seems to be a huge financial burden, which is why many girls choose not to attend.

Sidney Johnson, a senior at East, focused her senior project on a solution to this problem. Along with Ruthie West and Ava Singh, Johnson created The Confidence Closet, a small room dedicated to providing free prom dresses for girls who cannot afford the absurd prices of a prom dress. “As a senior, I have invested a lot of my money in formal and prom dresses, and I think that they can get ridiculously expensive, especially prom dresses,” Johnson said.

The closet features racks filled with a diverse selection of dresses, available in various colors, sizes, brands, and styles. Some dresses have been used, but a large fraction of them have price tags and have never been worn. In addition to dresses, the closet will also include free hair and makeup supplies (Ruthie West’s project) and supplies for teen moms (Ava Singh’s project).

Challenges

One of the many challenges Johnson had with The Confidence Closet was putting the room together and designing it. “The room that we are storing things in is bright orange. There’s holes, and there’s paint missing, and they don’t allow us to repaint it,” Johnson said. As a result, the girls have decided to put up wallpaper as an alternative to painting the room.

Legacy

However, The Confidence Closet is not a one-time project. Johnson intends to pass her project down to someone next year and for many years following. “This year, I hope to just kind of get a baseline for the project. It’ll be a legacy project, so I’ll pass it down to someone next year, and then that person will pass it down,” Johnson says. To make that happen, she helped kickstart the layout and design of the room and began collecting dresses.
