As previously discussed in The Confidence Closet, prom can be a stressful time for everyone, especially for students struggling to afford the expenses, such as dresses, hair, makeup, jewelry, etc. Ruthie West, a senior at East, collaborated with Sidney Johnson and Ava Singh to make The Confidence Closet for their senior project, a small room on the second floor that provides free clothing and accessories for juniors and seniors attending prom or other formal events. 

West’s part of the project focuses on cosmetics and accessories. “My project offers girls access to hair products, a wide range of makeup supplies, hot hair tools, jewelry, perfume, and other self-care items,” West says. Because of all of the prom expenses, many students decide not to go. However, West’s project gives all girls at East the same opportunity to go to formal events and feel confident.

Aside from academics and extracurricular activities, West does nails, and you can book with her using the information at the bottom of the page. West began doing her own nails in July of 2024 to save money. At the time, she did not have a job, so paying for nails at a salon was outside of her budget. As she grew older, she began doing her friends’ nails in addition to other clients she met from doing nails. As you can see in the pictures, West can do a variety of styles and designs, and her sets have a 5-week retention. “I really enjoy doing nails, and I especially love that my prices are cheap and I make sure that cost isn’t an issue,” West says.

Over the course of the school year, West has slightly backed off on taking new clients due to the business of school and extracurriculars, but she is interested in gaining more for the summer. After summer, West will go to college, so until she comes back for the next summer, she will not book with her clients in Columbus.
