Run the Jewels impresses with an innovative sound

The hip-hop duo, Run the Jewels, released their third studio album on Christmas Eve of 2016 titles “Run the Jewels 3”. Killer Mike and El-P have produced music over the past and have made a name for themselves as a successful rap group. Their first album titled “Run the Jewels” was released in 2013 and created a large enough fan base for their second album “Run the Jewels 2” in 2014.

“Run the Jewels 3” was set to be released in early 2017 but instead was unexpectedly released on Christmas Eve of 2016 as a free download. The album itself parallels to the two previous records in its unique lyrical delivery and intense feel of the music. Songs such as “Call Ticketron” brings a high energy and intensity typical of party music and popular rap music. Another unique song from this record, “2100”, utilizes a punchy drum groove as well as crisp guitars and vocals.
While many aspects of this album were executed positively, some songs fall victim to repetition. “Panther Like a Panther” seemingly drones on the same note and format for the entirety of the song.

Run the Jewels is headed in a positive direction and their innovation continues to impress critics. The future of Run the Jewels will continue to evolve as all artists’ music does and I feel like the path they’re headed on is a good one.
