Dino of the Week: Dilophosaurus
September 7, 2017
Name: Dilophosaurus
Time Period: The Dilophosaurus, or Dilo for short, lived around 193 million years ago during the early Jurassic Period.
Diet: The Dilo was a meat eater and is believed to have hunted in packs because of large amounts of them being found at the same dig site. The Dilo has often been misinterpreted in the media because of its portrayal in the movie Jurassic Park where it is seen as stunning its prey with poisonous venom. In reality there is no evidence of it ever being able to do this.
Size: The Dilo was also portrayed poorly in Jurassic Park in relation to its size. The movie portrayed the dino to be the size of a dog when in reality, they grew to around 20 feet long and could be close to 8 feet tall in some instances. It could have weighed around 1000 pounds or the weight of 5 large boars today!
Fun Facts:
- The Dilophosaurus may have been warm blooded.
- Fossils have been found all over the world from North America to China.
- There is no evidence that the Dilo had the expandable frill around its neck that Jurassic Park depicts.
