What Can Be Done to Make the City Less Boring?
May 15, 2018
To everyone’s surprise, Columbus, Indiana was recently ranked sixth on Forbes’ list of Top 10 Coolest U.S. Cities to Visit in 2018. While Columbus is an intriguing city for “architecture buffs,” there are not many interesting options for teenagers, especially within a reasonable price range.
Sure, there are plenty of opportunities to view the architectural aspects of the city on tours. However, this may not be the ideal way to spend a weekend with a group of friends. Personally, I do enjoy architecture, but when I am with my friends, I want to go out and do an exciting activity with them.
One of the problems with finding things to do is that the options are limited during the winter. Columbus has plenty of outdoor activities, such as parks and walking trails, but when the temperature is below 50 degrees, no one wants to be outside.
Another issue with wanting to go out with friends is that often times, the things I want to do are too expensive. It is especially difficult to find inexpensive activities when you cannot go outside, so in the winter, I often resort to staying home.
Although Columbus seems to not have many activities that interest teenagers, there are a few places to go hang out with friends.
- When it is cold outside, ice skating at the Hamilton Ice Arena is always a decent option. It is fairly cheap with the general admission being only $4 for ages up to 17 and $4.50 for ages 18 and older.
- The Columbus Bowling Center is another option, especially for a group of people. Before 5pm during the week, admission is only $3 and after 5pm admission is $4. It is only an additional $3 for shoe rental.
- While it may be more expensive, the Columbus Rock Gym is a newer place to go hang out with friends for the day. With a $12 day pass, you can spend the day rock climbing at this indoor facility.
Columbus may not have a large amount of activities to do as teenagers, however there are a few options of fun things to do with friends. Although, it would be nice if the city could invest in more interesting activities for teens that are actually affordable.
