Brain Chips: The Virus of the Future?

Robert Kanehl, Design Editor

In 2016, inventor and entrepreneur Elon Musk founded a company under the name “Neuralink.” Up until recently, the motives and purpose of this trademark have been unknown. However, in July of 2019, Musk made his intentions clear. The big reveal, so to speak, is a microscopic chip that is to be implanted in a person’s brain allowing them to interface with artificial intelligence, or AI.

Now, this idea is not new. Scientists have already made the achievement of allowing a human brain and technology to interact, however it has never been done to this extent.

The purpose of this program is for, initially, helping patients with alzheimers and similar diseases with brain-deterioration. According to Musk, the chip will help patients recover what they have lost and continue to learn. Furthermore, this will allow for paraplegics and people with poor hand-eye-coordination skills to use technology seamlessly.

However, the potential for this expands tremendously beyond helping patients. One key feature is the ability to control computers and other technology via your brain.

Take, for instance, your cell phone. Neuralink will allow you to scroll through your phone, send text messages, and even take pictures without ever lifting a finger. This has many implications, some of which are concerning to the American public.

Regardless of what people believe, the Neuralink will be produced. In fact, Musk estimates that the first chip to go inside a human’s brain will be achieved by the end of 2020. One could even reasonably assume that it will eventually be as common as cell phones are now.

This may seem scary, however it is an essential step in the technological evolution of the human race. As our technology advances exponentially, the Neuralink will open doors for thousands of new possibilities.

However, maybe the company runs out of funding and no real product is ever released. All of this is completely subjected to change. But if it does happen, it could be one of the most revolutionary technological advances for the human race to this point in time.
