Farewell 2010s

With the start of a new decade, it is time to look back and reflect on the memories from the past decade. The last 10 years have had many ups and downs, including the first african-american president, mass shootings and climate change. So, to help refresh your mind, here is a list of the most popular events and moments that occurred throughout the last decade.
2010
- One Direction comes together after making it to the third finalist spot on the music competition show “The X Factor”
- The first episode of “Good Luck Charlie” airs on Disney Channel
- Angry Birds is pretty popular
- Silly Bandz, colorful rubber bands formed into shapes, become popular
- Apple releases its first iPad
2011
- Rebecca Black releases the song “Friday,” becoming the most viewed Youtube video of the year
- “Rolling In The Deep” is the number one song of the year
- Planking is a thing for a while
- “Teach me How to Dougie” by Cali Swag District is released
- Beyonce announces her first pregnancy
2012
- “The Avengers” is released, receiving a 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes
- “Gangnam Style” is a thing
- Barack Obama is elected for his second term of presidency
- Snapchat is created
- “Call Me Maybe” is annoyingly catchy and everywhere. Even Justin Bieber makes a lip-sync video to it
2013
- The term “memes” is born
- The Harlem Shake is a dance that becomes really popular through Youtube and Vine
- The Xbox One and PS4 both come out in November
- Miley Cyrus cuts her hair and goes on to having a rebellious career for the next three years
- The app Vine, where six-second videos are created and uploaded, blows up
2014
- The Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared
- Ebola struck West Africa
- The finale of “How I Met Your Mother” sparks a big reaction from the show’s fans after finding out what happened at the end (don’t worry, no spoilers here)
- “Guardians of The Galaxy” is released in August
- The ALS ice bucket challenge is used to spread awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The challenge goes viral on social media
2015
- The supreme court voted to allow same-sex couples to marry nationwide
- There were many attacks and shootings
- The “black and blue dress” goes viral on various platforms. The dress baffled many because some saw it as black and blue and others saw it as white and gold
- Zayn left One Direction after being with the group for approximately five years
- Floyd Mayweather v. Manny Pacquiao, the fight of the century, takes place in Las Vegas
2016
- Donald Trump becomes the 45th president
- Creepy clowns are everywhere. People report sightings of evil disguised clowns near schools and forests, sparking fear nationwide
- At the Pulse nightclub shooting, a security guard kills 49 and wounds 53 others. A three-hour stand-off lead to the shooter’s death
- “Stranger Things” is released on Netflix
- Leonardo DiCaprio finally wins an Oscar for the best actor of 2016 for “The Revenant”
2017
- Colin Kaepernick continues to take a knee at games to call attention to racial inequality, and police brutality
- “Get Out” breaks box office records
- The #MeToo movement blows up. #MeToo was first used by activist and sexual harassment survivor Tarana Burke in 2006
- The debate on abortion continues between republicans and democrats
- A total solar eclipse occurred across the United States for the first time since 1918. The next solar eclipse expected to be seen in the U.S. is projected for 2024
2018
- “Avengers: Infinity War” is released in April
- Child immigrants are separated from their parents
- Beyonce is bitten by actress Sanaa Lathan at Jay-Z’s “4:44” album party
- Wildfires in California spread from July to August, become the biggest fires ever recorded in California history
- Voting for midterm elections brought out over 49.3 percent of the eligible voting population, making this the highest voter turnout in a century
2019
- Amazon Rainforest fires go viral after a few Twitter posts with fake pictures of the fires blow up
- Area 51 becomes a meme after a Facebook post asked for people to join together and raid Area 51
- “Avengers Endgame” is released on April 26 and breaks box office records by earning over 2.798 billion dollars, surpassing Avatar’s record of 2.79 billion dollars
- The Notre Dame Cathedral fire gains lots of public attention. Money was gathered from celebrities and other important figures to restore the cathedral
- President Trump is the third President to be impeached on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress
