Summer is not quite over yet for students that show in the Indiana State Fair. One of these students was junior Liz Kroger, who took part in the horse show Monday and Tuesday. Ever since Kroger was eligible in the summer after third grade, she has competed at the state fair in Indianapolis.

Along with her “barn family” Kroger competes in the English riding portion of the horse show. This year Kroger and her horse Winston were in three classes; Halter, Hunter Under Saddle, and Equitation.

This year is the first year Kroger has shown her horse Winston. Placing 2nd, 7th, and 8th in her classes, Kroger believes that this has not been her worst year showing, but also not the best. Nevertheless, for the past eight years the State Fair has been Kroger’s favorite show to compete in.

“The state fair has always been one of my favorite shows to show at, because of the people who are there and it feels like such a big atmosphere you feel kinda like a professional,” said Kroger.

Even with the excitement of showing in the fair and hanging out with friends all day, there is an added stress to missing school for two days, especially when school is just beginning.

“Missing school honestly stresses me out, but I know I’d rather go to a horse show than go to school,” Kroger said. “I always ask my teachers for the homework prior to leaving so I can try to get a head start on it.”

Kroger is still thankful for the opportunity she has to go and show at such a tough competition. Her dad told her “horse shows are fun, but it’s the memories that last a lifetime” and Kroger agrees wholeheartedly.
