All around the world, there are children who grow up believing in Santa Claus. Though there are different names for him, even different traditions, Santa remains a vital part of Christmas for many children. How is it that Santa came to be in the first place?

The legend of Santa Claus can be derived from around 280 A.D. At that time there was a monk who was named St. Nicholas, he was known for his kindness and willingness to help and to give. Eventually, St. Nicholas was known as the protector of children and sailors. It wasn’t until the 18th century that Santa was born as a Christmas icon that gave to children during the holiday season. At this time the idea of Christmas shopping was introduced in American pop culture as well.

Believing in Santa is important for young children because it allows them to have magic during the holidays. For most children in America, Christmas is the most magical day of the year. They wake up Christmas morning excited and full of anticipation for what gift lay under the tree or in their stocking. When a child sees their present under the tree wrapped with love with the words “From Santa” on it, they become overwhelmed with joy and hope.

Children feel hope because no matter how difficult their life may be, on Christmas they have just one day that is happy. They open their present and they feel loved because they know that somewhere out there, someone cares. This feeling is because Santa brought them a gift that is special just for them and that is magical.

Miracles always seem to happen during the holiday season. The belief in Santa allows each child to have their own little miracle on Christmas morning, and that may be the most magical feeling a child can have.
