Midnights: A Review
Meet me at midnight is exactly what Taylor Swift fans did on Friday Oct 1 with the drop of Swift’s 10th studio album’ Midnight’s.This is the singer songwriter’s first album after the re-recording of her Albums ‘Fearless’ and ‘Red’ (Taylor’s Version).
Midnights is Swift’s most personal album yet and she reflects on body image, love and of- course, revenge. The overall theme of this album is reflection not reformation.
The album was revealed during the MTV’s as Swift was accepting an award that night, she then waited until midnight to reveal the title as well as the cover art on all social media platforms.
“Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21. Meet me at midnight,” Swift said.
Until the drop of the album, Swift would upload different Tiktoks revealing track titles which added to the hype of the new album.
What I adore most about this album is how different it was from her past albums with the new production style from (title)Jack Antonoff. Although the album has a totally new sound, there is still a nod to her old music with the song ‘Karma’ which sounds a lot like her album, ‘Reputation.’
To summarize how the album feels, it feels like the dead of winter combined with a bonfire at midnight. There are songs of revenge and love. My two absolute favorite songs are “Maroon” and “You’re on Your Own Kid.”
Different theories have circulated around each song, ‘Maroon’ has many on who it is truly about. Since the color Maroon represents complexities, and that love leaves imprints on one’s mind. Lyrically, “You’re on Your Own, Kid” seems to be a compilation of all of Midnights’ themes as it provides the most holistic look at how Swift has grown through the years
Along with the album release, there have been two music videos released for ‘Anti-Hero’ and ‘Bejeweled.’ The music video for ‘Anti-Hero’ was full of easter eggs from past albums and the media backlash she had received. The ‘Bejeweled’ music video is just how it sounds, full of glitter with a Cinderella theme.
Swift announced on Good Morning America that she would be going on ‘The Eras Tour,’ which although unclear of what the tour will actually be centered around, fans interpret this to mean that she will be performing songs from each of her albums. Swift will tour along with artists such as Phoebe Bridgers, Muna, Gracie Abrams, Haim, Girl in Red, Paramore as well as many others.
‘Midnights’ was certainly a success as she became the first artist to fill up the top 10 in a single week on the Billboard Hot100.
