Screaming for 2022

Scream 2022 is the fifth installment in the Scream movie franchise. Released on Jan. 13 2022, nearly 11 years after Scream four was released in theaters, Scream fans were excited and nervous to have their favorite series back after so many years.

However, many overestimated the movie and were left disappointed, Rotten Tomatoes giving the movie only 76 percent in terms of ratings. I found the movie much more humorous than scary.

I was, though, delighted when the movie made fun of its own shortcomings, as it made the movie much more enjoyable. This, too, set up the scene for a creative take on why the new Ghostface is murdering these people.

The main characters from the previous Scream movies, Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott and Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, returned to once again be haunted by their past mistakes, yet they did not add as much to the plot as I was hoping for.

Tara Carpenter, played by Jenna Ortega, and Sam Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera, may be the new main characters for any upcoming movies in the Scream franchise.

The movie starts with the iconic phone call, similar to the first Scream, only this time the call is targeted towards Tara, not Sidney. Tara paces around the room in the same fashion as Sidney, making dinner and playing with a kitchen knife while on the phone.

There was a grand amount of pressure on Jenna Ortega in this scene and many fans got upset with the way it was performed, remembering the original so well. However, I thought this scene was well-executed and Ortega’s acting flair was refreshing.

The ending was likely the most humorous part about the movie. The characters are murdered in ironic ways, leading to less scares. In this, the twist at the end was actually quite unexpected, and I will most definitely be rewatching the movie again in the future.
