The Columbus East girls volleyball team begins their journey to State. Sectionals starts this week at East Central. In the first round, they will take on crosstown rival Columbus North.

The Olympians defeated the Bulldogs in the regular season match by score of 3-0. The match was hard fought, with the first two sets being very close in score.

The sectional consists of the schools East Central, Columbus North and East, Shelbyville, and Bloomington South and North. Their combined record against sectional opponents this season is 7-0. This shows the Olympians are favored to win their Sectional.

The Olympians have been ranked as high as fifth in the state this season. Last season, the Olympians won their Sectional after defeating Shelbyville and proceeded to lose to Center Grove in Regionals.

The team’s seniors have high expectations to make a deep run in the tournament.

Senior Alaysha Pollert explains how they have helped the less experienced players gain confidence going into play

“I feel like we have helped our younger teammates mature throughout the season,” Pollert said. “We always try to be positive role models to the freshmen and sophomores.”

The Olympians play North at 7pm on Thursday, October 20.
