Columbus East held this year’s first choir concert on Monday. Members of both the Olympian Choir and Center Stage performed sets that they have been practicing since the start of the school year.

The Olympian Choir began the show with “Castle on a Cloud”, a number from the musical Les Miserable. They performed other well known pieces such as “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “My Heart Will Go On”, as well as numbers such as “Festival Cantate” and “The Rose”. They finished with “Bless the Broken Road”, and after an applause, took their seats as Lauren Wagner, the first soloist, took the stage.

Wagner, 11, sang “God Help the Outcasts” from the musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame. After her moving performance, Luke Major, 12, changed the mood with a more upbeat number: “Dancing Through Life” from Wicked. Sarah Harpring, 12, finished the set with “Thank You for the Music” by Abba.

The three soloists then joined the rest of Center Stage as the show choir’s set began.

Center Stage led with “Living on a Prayer”, the first number in “A Tribute to Bon Jovi”. Following the upbeat medley, “Children of Eden” was performed with soloist Erin Erickson, 10.

This was Erickson’s first show choir concert, and therefore her first solo.

“It was so scary,” Erickson said, “but it was a lot of fun. I’ll definitely be doing show choir in the future.”

After another piece titled “In Whatever Time We Have”, Center Stage wrapped up the show with “Get Ready/Dancin’ In the Street” as Harpring led with another amazing solo.

“I think we did pretty well considering we have a lot of new members. There’s definitely room for improvement, but I think we have enough time to improve before the next show,” said Center Stage Member Josh Sensanbaugher, 11.

East’s choirs will return during the second quarter for a winter concert.
