Avery Otto is a senior at Columbus East High School. She plans on graduating in May of 2016, but before she can graduate, she has to finish her senior project. For her senior project, Otto decided to base it around Advocates For Children, an organization that helps children who are abused and neglected.

This was not her first idea for her project. The original idea was actually going to be a 5K for cross country but it was not approved. Later, she came up with the idea for “Dash to the Patch”. The Dash to the Patch is a 5K that will be held at Mill Race Park on Oct. 24th, 2015.

Otto said, “There are two parts to the project. The first part is the night of a 1,000 Jacks which is where I carve ten pumpkins and then people put one dollar in for a ticket. The second part is the Dash to the Patch”.

The theme of this was made because of the first part of the project (The night of a thousand Jacks) and from the scariest part of the year, Halloween . The flyer design it was created and designed by Amy Lienhoop.

Aside from the help of friends and family, Otto has also had help from all over Columbus. She has some business that have helped her get the word for the 5k. One business that has helped is a hair salon that her mom owns. Another business that has helped is a t-company that is putting a discount on the shirts, so that they don’t have to spend an expensive amount on just t-shirts.

All the money that she is getting is going to the Advocates For Children. Otto said that the Advocates for Children has gotten over $1,000 dollars from a student’s senior project. The main goal for Otto is to get over $1,000 and so far she has achieved that goal and is still raising more.
