On March 11, junior Ellie Simpson was elected president of the Indiana high school organization FCCLA, or Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America.

FCCLA is a program that intends to provide students with fundamental skills that will be beneficial to their individual futures. It is a great way to enhance one’s speaking, presenting and critical thinking abilities. Through FCCLA, students also learn the value of teamwork, career preparation and community involvement.

“One of the main goals FCCLA strives to reach is preparing its members for tomorrow’s work force,” said Simpson. “It is an organization bound for the future.”

Simpson’s duties as president will require her to plan and host the 2018 Indiana State Conference, as well as lead the summertime Leadership Academy and other small discussion events. Small discussion events include activities such as the “cluster” and various youth sessions – both focus on improving one’s basic FCCLA knowledge and skills.

“My two favorite things about FCCLA are being able to travel around the U.S., and getting the opportunity to meet new people and hear their stories,” said Simpson.

In relation to East, FCCLA has a fairly dominant presence, for members are constantly looking for ways to maximize their service and involvement in the local community. Numerous fundraisers are also held throughout the year in order to better the overall FCCLA program.

“FCCLA is a really great way to get involved at East and in Columbus’s community,” said Simpson. “I definitely recommend joining. By joining students can aid in sustaining the great environment of East and gain valuable leadership skills for their futures.”
