Last week (Sept.10-16), the world’s dedication to ending suicide was brought to surface, known as Suicide Prevention week.

On Wednesday (Sept.13), during mods 5a/5b at Columbus East, hundreds gathered in the bus lot for the Student Assembly’s Suicide Prevention cookout, where students were able to enjoy free lunch in honor of supporting an end to suicide.

In all 50 states, a walk for suicide prevention was held by The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

AFSP statistics show that Indiana has had an increasing rate of over 930 suicide deaths annually, including some of Columbus East’s own students in recent years. As the 10th leading cause of death in the US, teens and young adults may have the lowest suicide rate, but it is still a very serious topic that must be discussed.

East is making an effort to inform students about possible future resources when it comes to the subject by bringing in representatives of local prevention agencies to speak with those interested throughout the week. The East community is also making an attempt to keep teens aware of the issue by encouraging positive behavior toward one another and informing the student body of useful tips, advice, and hotline numbers through the itsLearning home page.
